Appreciating Simple and Minimalist Web Designs

If you are a new developer, you are most probably very enthusiastic to apply all the skills you’ve learned about web development. You want to impress everyone because you know how to do these things. Things like placing a whole bunch of images and videos on your site, putting up a background music, using different text styles including letters that have the ability to move either horizontally or vertically on the screen. But sometimes this creates a problem because your output will most likely be cluttered and that’s not what we are aiming for when creating websites. Most users prefer websites that are not heavy on the eyes and not containing too many unnecessary elements which can be very distracting. That is why it is very important to appreciate simple website designs.

When we talk about web design, the most basic meaning of simplicity is the removal of all unnecessary elements from a design. This usually results in a very clean layout with lots of white space and a simple color scheme composed of two to three colors. One thing to always remember when aiming for simplicity is to never be afraid of having white spaces because it is a big contributor in giving your site a simplistic appeal. The most common advantage of creating a simple web design is that it is much less time consuming to design and build. This might be helpful to you later on especially if you are handling several projects. One other advantage of simplicity on a web design is that it improves the legibility of the design. Putting micro white spaces between texts and other elements makes them easier to read or scan. Maintaining a website can be very time consuming especially if you are dealing with a complex site. Another obvious advantage is that it’s easier update or modify a simple web design. A simple code is a lot easier to debug. That means the website will be easier to maintain thus saving you a lot of time and effort. Simple websites are also easier to navigate. If the unnecessary decorative elements are removed, it makes it easier for the users to find navigation elements. It helps the user to focus on the things that you want him to find without battling too many distractions. Simple websites also have smaller file sizes so that means they take up less server space. And one of the most beneficial effects of having a simple web design is that it generally loads faster. Users tend to be impatient about sites that take forever to load and their first instinct is to find another site. Let’s face it, there are a thousand other sites out there that can serve the user’s needs thus, you have to compete in order to retain visitors to the site.

The bottom-line is, when you aim for a simple web design, you make almost everything easier. This is not just on the user’s part but also on your end as the developer.
