Some project managers are still finding ways on how to raise productivity from their IT staff. It is much like in basketball, the star receives the most minutes but we can’t make one employee to work more than their regular work hours or bulk him/her with tasks. How to make all of your team members a star player? Raise their productivity and here are the five ways I think you can raise your staff’s productivity rating.
Don’t give them multiple projects at the same time.
There is one Japanese quote that can be applied to this, “One who chases after two hares won’t catch even one.” An employee can’t concentrate too much on one project because he/she will have to think about the other project and which it will confuse them in the process cutting their productivity rating to half. Let them finish first on one project then give them the other one. Of course, don’t let them sulk their whole year in just one project. Let them hasten the process but don’t let the quality lose its value.
Let them do on what they are comfortable in doing.
Project managers must not give rules on how to construct their codes. Just remind them to clean up their codes and put on necessary spacing but don’t let them restrict on naming their variables, how they will implement them, class names, and alike. This will make them feel awkward in composing their codes. Just like George S. Patton said, “Don’t tell people how to do things, tell them what to do and let them surprise you with their results“. Give them freedom on how they will implement it and just ask for a detailed report on how they pulled it off.
Raise their morale rather than lower it
Don’t scold them too much just for committing a very simple mistake like wrong design spacing, spelling, and not displaying a simple symbol. Weigh first the offense then judge. Your staff members like to feel at ease on their work and would like to have a harmonious environment.
Interact at their workplace
It’s good to interact once in a while but don’t distract them if they are concentrating on their work. If they feel frustrated on constructing their code, ask them in a nice way on what’s the problem and help them. If they did a good job, praise them for their work. Ask them on what did they worked on and the current status of their task.
Keep them busy
If one is not doing anything and there’s no task available, make him/her study something like the new trends in technology or a new programming language/scripts and alike. Make them study so that if a new project will arrive, the lessons learned might be useful. Give also 10 minutes to share team on what new things that they learned.
